This study will probably rile up the low-carb legions, who seem to have completely taken over the blogosphere and a good portion of allopathic medicine too. Not a day goes by that I don’t see an article or an interview by a prominent MD claiming that sugar, and especially sucrose, is the origin of all health problems. Somehow, it has been completely forgotten that consuming hefty amounts of sucrose was considered quite normal up until the 1960s and even children consumed a good amount of added sucrose from Coke, ice-cream, pastries, candy, etc. The study below found that eliminating completely sugar (sucrose) from the diet not only did not lead to weight loss, but also dramatically exacerbated a number of key metabolic biomarkers including serum glucose, insulin, blood lipids, etc. Perhaps even more worryingly, the sucrose-free diet led to liver and gut inflammation. In other words, a sugar-free diet was sufficient to cause the main conditions seen in adults from developed countries there days – i.e. metabolic syndrome, diabetes, fatty liver, and gut inflammation/dysbiosis.

The researchers also observed significant changes in hormones involved in metabolism and appetite regulation, as well as lower fasting insulin levels. One notable finding of the study involved changes in the gut microbiome and inflammation in the sugar-free mice. The researchers found lower levels of several beneficial bacteria that help support gut health and regulate inflammation, including Lactobacillus murinus. Additionally, they noted an increase in bacteria linked to inflammatory conditions which was accompanied by signs of inflammation in the colon. Another concerning change the researchers noticed in the sugar-free mouse group was that they developed signs of fatty liver disease and liver inflammation. While more research is needed to determine whether these findings apply to humans, the results suggest that eliminating sucrose from a low-fat diet may alter the gut microbiome and affect metabolic health, highlighting the importance of overall dietary balance.”
