This is a very important study, at least to me, for two main reasons. First, it once again demonstrates that two “mysterious” and serious conditions of “idiopathic” origin are little more than mitochondrial function in disguise. Second, it may have implications way beyond those two conditions since the latter one (Raynaud’s) is a very often a symptoms of undiagnosed cancer. If humble niacinamide can ameliorate those two conditions, it may very well be helpful for cancer too. The dosage of niacinamide was on the high end but way below the 3g daily dose beyond which liver problems may occur in humans. The trial used 500mg of niacinamide taken twice daily (1g total faily), for a period of just 2 weeks! It is very hard to imagine that the benefits would not have been much more pronounced had the trial lasted longer.

Vitamin B3 may improve blood vessels in scleroderma-related Raynaud’s
“…Oral treatment with vitamin B3 for a couple of weeks may reduce abnormalities in tiny blood vessels of people with scleroderma who have Raynaud’s phenomenon, a small study suggests. After two weeks of supplementation, participants showed more normal and fewer giant blood vessels under the fingernails, although these changes did not translate into meaningful symptom reduction or improved quality of life. According to researchers, “the more limited subjective response in scleroderma-related [Raynaud’s] may reflect reduced vasodilatory [blood vessel widening] responsiveness in the context of established structural vascular disease.””
