If that is the case, then neutralizing endotoxin with charcoal or molecules that can bind endotoxin and deactivate it should have similar effects. There is already evidence that pregnane steroids such as progesterone (and pregnenolone) can ameliorate brain damage from trauma, and it just so happens that progesterone binds and deactivated endotoxin as I posted on my blog in the recent past. This direct connection between neuronal TLR4 and MMP-9 in the injured brain is the crucial link.\u201d The research used both rat and mouse models of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>mild-to-moderate concussive brain injury<\/strong><\/span>. The scientists observed that levels of both TLR4 and MMP-9 were upregulated rapidly after injury. But when researchers blocked TLR4 signaling \u2014 either pharmacologically in rats or genetically in mice \u2014 MMP-9 levels remained unchanged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;\u201cWhen inhibition drops or excitation becomes excessive, the network activity patterns lose precision,\u201d Subramanian said. \u201cInstead of meaningful communication, you get excessive noise across the network, which interferes with learning, memory formation, and recall.\u201d The researchers found the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">animals with TBI showed reduced synaptic plasticity<\/span><\/strong> \u2014 the brain\u2019s ability to strengthen or reorganize neural connections during learning.
