{"id":2166,"date":"2023-02-28T14:42:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/haidut.me\/?p=2166"},"modified":"2023-02-28T14:42:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:42:36","slug":"declining-dht-in-aging-linked-to-cardiovascular-disease-cvd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/haidut.me\/?p=2166","title":{"rendered":"Declining DHT in aging linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another study demonstrating that the &#8220;villain of all males around the world&#8221; &#8211; the dastardly androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) &#8211; actually is, in all likelihood, beneficial for males, at least when it comes to their cardiovascular health. However, since CVD is one of the risk factors for prostate enlargement\/cancer (which DHT ostensibly causes), the study below raises (again) serious doubts that DHT is a causative factor in prostate disease as well. I wonder how much longer can the charade known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Androgen_deprivation_therapy\">androgen hypothesis<\/a> continue before the general public realizes it is been had.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36693531\/\">https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36693531\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;<strong class=\"sub-title\">Results:\u00a0<\/strong>Although concentration of testosterone was not different between young and older group, it was demonstrated that DHT, DHEA-S, AE and ADG were significantly lower in older men in comparison to young men (p &lt; 0.01). Interestingly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\">the most surprising difference was found for DHT<\/span> concentration, that was as much as 61 % lower in aged men that displayed significantly higher values of cIMT, AI, crPWV and SI (p &lt; 10<sup>-4<\/sup>), suggestive of arterial stiffness<\/strong><\/span>. Furthermore, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>DHT was negatively correlated to all arterial wall parameters (cAI, crPWV, SI and cIMT), c-reactive protein (CRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) concentration, as well as positively correlated to markers of endothelial function<\/strong><\/span> (MNA and 6-keto-PGF<sub>1\u03b1<\/sub>) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in all studied individuals<\/strong><\/span> (n = 23). <strong class=\"sub-title\">Conclusions:\u00a0<\/strong>We have shown that ageing leads to a significant decrease in DHT concentration that is accompanied by impaired arterial wall characteristics and worsened endothelial function.
